The first ER visit

November 22, 2009

Today Dayemi and I planned to take the kids to a music park in Temple Terrace. She had called me to let me know she'd be here in 10 minutes so I was getting the kids packed for lunch and out the door. I didn't tell Vaughn that his best friend Zachary was coming as I didn't want him to start getting too excited and misbehaving.

He wanted to know if he could bring his game, and I said he could use it in the truck. The game was on the table, where he put it, except instead of just taking it off the table, he decided to get up on the chair. Once he had the game in hand, he decided to jump off the chair. He landed too close to the rocking chair and ended up splitting his head open.

At first, as he cried I thought he was making more of it than it was, but I didn't see it as I had been going to get the dog from outside. As soon as I got to him I could see this was serious and he was definitely not being overly dramatic.

Once Dayemi got there, we agreed he needed to go the ER. She offered to come with me, which was not only nice but exceptionally helpful. She watched Kyra while I took Vaughn in for admitting and then when he went to the back to get checked out.

Nothing gets you to forget your pain and troubles like your best friend. Zack and Vaughn played in the waiting room until it was Vaughn's turn.

When in the exam room, the doctor was very nice and set Vaughn at ease right away.

Vaughn was such a trooper. The Dr. had to put in 3 staples and the doctor and nurse were so impressed how well he took getting the staples. They remarked he behaved better than adults! I was so proud of him.

Because he was so good, the doctor gave him gloves for him and Zachary. Vaughn had wanted gloves because when we go to the dentist, they always give him a pair (but they have a bubble gum smell to those).

It was a little late to go to the music park so we decided to take them to the mall to play instead. It was hilarious as they both played for quite some time with the gloves on. I am sure other parents thought we were a bunch of germaphobes! The boys and Kyra had a great time at the Mall.

Then it was home for a much needed NAP!

The list of firsts is long and this is one you hope you never check off, but fortunately he was ok. Next time ask for a face mask to go with the gloves, then people will REALLY start wondering!
